Tokyo Pipe Co. Neo Type III
The flint is positioned underneath the spark wheel within a cylindrical flint tube. To access it:
- Unscrew the cap of the flint tube—it’s a spring loaded mechanism, so be sure to do this in a controlled space where small parts won’t get lost.
- Once opened, gently pull out the cap, which is attached to a long spring mechanism that holds the flint in place.
- Remove any old flint, insert the new flint into the tube, then reinsert the spring mechanism and securely fasten the cap.
Tokyo Pipe Co. New Type IV
The flint is located under the bottom cap of the lighter. To access it:
- Unscrew the bottom cap to reveal a small flathead screw.
- Carefully remove this screw with a flathead screwdriver to expose the flint chamber—the screw is attached to a spring loaded mechanism, so be sure to do this in a controlled space where small parts won’t get lost.
- Replace the old flint with a new one.
- Reinsert the spring mechanism and screw it tight with a flathead screwdriver. Be sure to not over tighten.
- Securely fasten the bottom cap.
Tokyo Pipe Co. Douglass Field L & Douglass Field S+
The flint is housed in the cylindrical flint tube beneath the spark wheel. To access it:
1. Unscrew the bottom cap of the lighter.
2. This allows for easier access to unscrew the cylindrical flint tube cap. Unscrew this cap carefully—it’s spring-loaded.
3. As you unscrew it, you’ll pull out a long spring mechanism attached to the cap. This mechanism holds the flint in place.
4. Remove any old flint, insert a new flint into the tube, then reinsert the spring mechanism and securely fasten both the flint tube cap and the bottom cap of the lighter.
To Maintain the Wick:
- Occasionally pull the wick up gently using a pair of flat tweezers.
- Trim the wick with scissors or, ideally, a pair of toenail clippers.
To Replace the Wick:
- Unscrew the bottom cap of the lighter.
-
For the Field S+: Remove the oil tank from the lighter to provide better access to the internal components. Remove the bottom cap from the oil tank.
- Remove the remaining wick by pulling it out from the top of the lighter.
-
For the Field L & Field S+: There are three prongs that hold the wick in place. Use your tweezers to gently bend the prongs away from the wick to release it.
- Use tweezers to carefully pull the cotton out of the bottom of the lighter.
- Your maintenance kit has two ends—use the end with the thin plastic tip as your guide.
- Thread the plastic tip through the top of the lighter and down through the bottom cap.
- Once the wick is successfully guided into the oil tank, trim off the plastic tip.
- Ensure the wick is fully seated in the tank, with enough length exposed at the top to light and burn properly.
- Use tweezers to stuff the cotton back into the oil tank.
-
If replacing the wick on the Field L or Field S+: Bend the three prongs back into place to hold the wick securely.
- For the Field S+: After replacing the wick and repositioning the cotton, securely place the oil tank back into the lighter and reattach the bottom cap.
This will keep your lighter functioning efficiently.
In 1926, an American oil lighter known as the Douglass lighter made its debut. It cost a whopping five dollars (most lighters of the time only cost 69 cents) and was known for being made with a high degree of skill and quality. While the original Douglass went extinct long ago, the Tokyo Pipe Co. brought the style back to life in 1993 through exceptional craftsmanship and a profound attention to detail.
Founded in 1946, the Tokyo Pipe Co. has been manufacturing smoking products for over 75 years. In 1993, the company re-manufactured the once extinct 1920's "Douglass" American oil lighter. Handcrafted by expert craftsmen in Japan, the lighters have become a staple of the company, as well as some of the most unique, durable, and gorgeous lighters on the market.

From Rich to Radiant
The Transformation of Brass Patina
Brass evolves beautifully over time, developing a rich patina that enhances its depth and character. As it reacts to air, moisture, and touch, its surface gradually shifts—deepening into warm golden hues, rich browns, or even hints of green and blue. Unlike materials that degrade, brass gains a lived-in elegance, with each mark and change telling a story of use and history. Through natural oxidation and handling, its finish becomes uniquely its own, embodying a timeless aesthetic that only grows more captivating with age.
